Winlink 2000
Slide 2 of 16
This slide comes from the Winlink 2000 website. Note in particular the cost of the Pactor III modem which they recommend -- $1,000.00. Not shown is the requirement for a laptop computer.
For those of you who are not familiar with it, Winlink 2000 “provides direct Radio users and Internet third-party users seamless, transparent email with attachments of reasonable size without any additional stress or learning curve” – and that is for the ultimate user, but not the individual ham, who will have to deal with substantial cost, and a steep learning curve.
[Note: the Report of the National Emergency Response Planning Committee (NERPC) of the ARRL suggested in early 2007 “developing a continuing education course covering the installation, configuration, and use of Winlink 2000 for email.” – if it was easy, there would be no need for such a course!]
